The country of Scotland is a world class destination in which to take a short break. The country great for a great amount of varied vacations, featuring large areas of stunning countryside with broad amounts of sites of outstanding natural beauty (perfect for mountain climbers, hikers, ramblers, hill-walkers and the likes). The nation also features some of the most popular visitor attractions, including, some of the best museums and galleries in the British Isles, majestic sites, castles, fortified houses, country homes and historical buildings plus much, much more. Below I discuss the port of Stranraer.
The town of Stranraer is located in the district of Dumfries and Galloway in south Scotland, it is renowned for being the place where it is possible to catch a ferry to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Sadly nearly all tourists do not get to see some of the attractions in the town and the surrounding countryside. This fact is a bit of a puzzle, if you arrive at the port, and reserve yourself a room in a bed and breakfast in Stranraer, a day or two earlier you can get to see a few of the visitor attractions before catching the ferry to the city of Belfast.
There are a few places to visit in the town of Stranraer including the medieval town house known as the Castle of St John in the centre of town. St John’s was erected at the very beginning of the 16th century as a home for Ninian Adair of Kilhurst (the Laird of Wigtownshire). It was renovated, during eighty eight/eighty nine, by the district council of Wigtown who made it available for public viewing in 1990.
Another visitor attraction close to the town is the gardens at Castle Kennedy. Castle Kennedy is the centrepiece of the garden which are found, between 2 lochs, on a hill (it is important to note that you are not allowed to visit the ruined castle. The gardens covers an area of seventy five acres. If you would like you can purchase plants from the shop which has propagated them from plants and seeds from the garden.
Another stunning tourist attraction worth a visit is Glenluce Abbey, about seven miles from Stranraer. Although it is in ruins (in truth the most ruined of 3 of Cistercian monasteries found in the south westerly region of Scotland) it also has a spectacular fifteenth-century Chapter House. Other places worth consideration include, the Mull of Galloway, the Machars, Port Logan and Portpatrick.
