Everyone should take short breaks; this is good for you and in the UK is easily done. There is a lot to do and see in this small island with a long history, and many destinations are very easy to reach by car, bus, plane or train. The public transport system is excellent so there is very little excuse for not taking short breaks in UK.

Because I love it so much, I am going to talk about North Wales as being the ultimate UK short break destination. The countryside is dynamic and visiting is almost like being in another country. The language they speak is Welsh, but don’t worry, they also speak English. From the moment you enter North Wales the name change and reading town names can be difficult for overseas tourists, but don’t worry the locals are friendly.

Snowdonia fortunately is a name that everyone can get their tongue around, but how about “Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch”, also a small village in North Wales, close to Snowdonia, in fact just across the Menai Straits on Anglesey, and it has to be seen to be believed. To master that name you would need longer than a short break!

You will also find the most beautiful beaches in the UK in north Wales, mostly on Anglesey Island, the large island at the top of Wales. Driving at a snails pace in Lligwy Beach will allow you to see the full beauty of this Green Coast awarded town, and for surfers the curlers of Black Rock Sands can be a joy to ride. This beach on the Llyn Peninsula has an incredible view of Cardigan Bay, and great rock pools and caves to explore when the tide is out.

Visiting castles is one of the most rewarding experiences and many people visit the UK for this reason alone. There are so many castles and Beaumaris is a sight to behold. It is the most perfect technological example of a-th century castle you can see anywhere in the world, and although it was never finished, you would never say so. The construction took 35 years, started by Edward I in 1295. For interests’ sake, the name Beaumaris is French, Norman and it means “beautiful marsh”.
