Brisbane two botanic gardens, are located in the city and at Mt Coot-tha. Both are maintained by Brisbane City Council. Mt Coot-tha’s botanic gardens, founded in 1970, are acknowledged as Queensland’s premier subtropical botanic gardens. This 52 hectare garden consists of more than 20,000 plants representing approximately 5000 species from around the world.

The City Botanical Gardens, Brisbane’s first botanical gardens, were established in 1855on a riverside site set aside as a botanic reserve in 1828 when Brisbane was first settled. The land initially supplied food for the early penal colony .Later, as a botanic gardens, it trialed crops and other plants from around the world, suitable for growing in the subtropical climate. These gardens are now regarded as the cradle of Queensland horticulture.

From 1870 to 1974, eight major floods swept through the City Botanic Gardens, damaging valuable plant collections. Council looked at alternative flood-free sites for a new botanic garden and chose an open woodland site five kilometers from the city centre on the eastern slopes of Mt Coot-tha.Detailed planning and work began in 1970.In January 1976 the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, at the foot of Mt Coot-tha were opened to the public.

There are now numerous plants located int he garden each arranged according to theme and geographical area, with almost half of the area is occupied by native plants. A visitor can enjoy educational and research programs, a reference and lending library, and the Queensland State Herbarium.

Since the gardens have numerous shaded areas, they are they perfect choice for an afternoon picnic. There are shelters, seating, toilets, and drinking fountains, at various locations throughout the gardens. There are three areas for Weddings, the Lakeside Restaurant that offers table service and caters for special events. The Brisbane Botanic Gardens are open every day between 8:00am and 5:30pm.
